Please note that this event has reached capacity. We're bringing you anti-racist trainings and workshops once a month though, so follow us on Facebook and/or become a SURJ member to stay tuned for what's next!

SURJ ATL is proud to present its first in-house Anti-Oppression training. We've been working hard to condense an anti-oppressive, consciousness raising practice into a 3.5 hour long session.

This workshop will be open to the public and is one of the requirements for official SURJ membership. If you are unable to attend, we will continue hosting anti-oppressive trainings in the near future.

New Church UMC, who is hosting our training, will have two to three childcare providers on site. Donations are welcome and highly recommended. The church is only two blocks away from the Edgewood-Candler Park station so please take MARTA.

Join the J20 Coalition for a marshal training designed for folks wanting to volunteer as marshals for the People's Inauguration March & Rally.

Marshals help facilitate the action as planned, direct people to the correct sources of information, help maintain everyone's safety, and act as barriers between police and outside interference. We will also go over how to be a police liaison.

The training is free though we do ask that those who are able bring a few dollars in cash to donate towards covering rental costs.

We recommend you attend a panel on the Movement for Black Lives taking place directly before the training in the same building, hosted by Metro Atlanta Democratic Socialists of America.

SURJ ATL Direct Action Planning Meeting

A Regime of Hate is poised to take power in DC on January 20. What action will you take?

Join SURJ ATL on January 11 to learn how you can take part in direct actions during the week of January 15 to protest the racism, misogyny, xenophobia, Islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia, and ableism of the Trump Administration. We will be talking about how to get involved in actions in Atlanta.

This meeting is also an opportunity for folks interested in getting involved more broadly with SURJ ATL’s Direct Action Team.

Why are we meeting at Ponce City Market? Because we want SURJ members to begin feeling comfortable talking about anti-racist work in white-affluent spaces with a history of oppression. These kinds of white spaces are the ones we will work to disrupt this coming year.

SURJ ATL Direct Action Training

https://www.facebook.com/events/989522194491350/

Are you considering attending a march, protest, walk-out, or other direct action for the first time?

Would you like a better understanding of your rights and how to support those who are marching in the streets for racial and social justice? Want to know about different roles and responsibilities for protests?

SURJ ATL wants to prepare YOU through our FREE direct action training in December! Led by two members of the National Lawyers Guild, this training will cover:

1) Overview of different roles in a direct action. (There’s more to do than march and chant!)

2) Do’s and don’ts for participating in your first direct action, including practical advice and how to position yourself if you come from a place of privilege.

3) If you were to get arrested: what to expect, how to prepare ahead of time, how to behave during the process, and what the implications are for you long-term.

You DO NOT have to be a SURJ member to participate! All folks who are ready to show up against oppression are welcome to attend.

Learn how to officially become a SURJ ATL member and concrete steps you can take to show up for racial justice.

NOW is the time to act and organize, because the lives of people of color, women, Muslims, immigrants, refugees, queer folks, trans folks, people with disabilities – depend on it.

Never been engaged in activism before? That's ok! SURJ ATL is a place for you to learn what role you can play in challenging injustice.

Everyone is welcome.

We strongly recommend taking MARTA to the meeting (the Decatur Station is across the street from the library). If MARTA is not possible, limited, free parking may be available at the Decatur Library. Additional parking is available nearby in various lots and in metered spaces on the street.
